April 1, 2004 -- Canon, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a global manufacturer of cameras, business machines and optical products, with subsidiaries in over 100 countries worldwide. Canon has manufacturing plants in Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, the US, Mexico, France, Germany and the UK. In fiscal 2003, Canon’s sales surpassed the ¥3,000 billion mark for the first time, rising by 8.8% to ¥3,198.1 billion (US$29.9 billion), and net income increased by 44.6% to a record ¥275.7 billion (US$2.6 billion). Canon has three major product groups, Business Machines, Cameras and Optical & Other Products. The focus of this profile is Canon’s medical equipment business which forms part of the company’s Optical & Other Products group.
In its medical business, Canon offers digital radiography systems, fundus cameras, retinal documentation cameras, auto refractors and an auto-alignment tonometer. The company also offered a range of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) but discontinued this product line at the end of 2003. In fiscal 2003, revenue from the Optical & Other Products segment increased by 18.6% to ¥270.6 billion (US$2.5 billion). However, due to severe competition and one-time expenses for the disposal of inventories, the division incurred an operating loss of ¥11.4 billion (US$107 million) for fiscal 2003 compared with a loss of ¥11.7 million in 2002. Canon does not provide sales figures for its medical device operations.
